TODAY IN HISTORY—DECEMBER 29, 2019:







A.   1170: Knights loyal to King Henry II murdered the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket, in the Canterbury Cathedral.
B.    1778: British troops occupy Savannah, Georgia.
C.   1808:  The 17th president of the United States, Andrew Johnson, was born in Raleigh, North Carolina.
D.   1812: During the War of 1812, the American frigate USS Constitution engaged and severely damaged the British frigate HMS Java about 30 miles off the coast of Brazil.  Before Commodore William Bainbridge ordered the sinking of the Java, he had her wheel removed to replace the one the Constitution had lost during the battle.
E.    1813: The British burned the city of Buffalo, New York, during the War of 1812.
F.    1845: The Union admitted Texas as its 28th state after President James K. Polk signed legislation authorizing it.
G.   1848: U.S. President James Polk turned on the first gas light at the White House on this date.
H.   1851: The first American Young Men’s Christian Association organized in Boston, Massachusetts.  
I.      1860: The HMS Warrior, Britain’s first seagoing iron-hulled warship, launched.
J.     1890: The Wounded Knee Massacre took place in South Dakota as an estimated 400 Sioux Indians died at the hands of U.S. troops sent to disarm them.  This was the last major conflict between Native Americans and U.S. troops.
K.   1910: Following approval by the approval by the Oklahoma state legislature, Governor Charles N. Haskell signed a bill that moved the state capital from Guthrie to Oklahoma City on this date.  However, opponents of the move challenged it in court but the Supreme Court of the United States eventually upheld the action.
L.    1911: Sun Yat-sen became the first president of a republican China. 
M.  1913: The first true “cliffhanger” movie serial, “The Adventures of Kathlyn,” starring Kathlyn Williams premiered.
N.   1916: A group of Russian noblemen in St. Petersburg, Russia killed Grigory Rasputin, the so-called “Mad Monk” who had wielded profound influence with Czar Nicholas II.
O.   1920: The government of Yugoslavia officially bans the Communist Party.
P.    1934: Japan formally renounced the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922.
Q.   1940: During World War II, Germany, dropped incendiary bombs on London, setting off what Londoners came to know as “The Second Great Fire of London.”
R.   1941: Ray Thomas, flautist and horn player with the Moody Blues[i], was born in England on this date.
S.    1943: Rick Danko[ii], future bassist and vocalist with the Canadian American rock group, the Band, was born in Canada on this date.  
T.    1945: Sheb Wooley recorded the first commercial record in Nashville, Tennessee, on this date.
U.   1947: British authorities drive away a ship carrying Jewish immigrants to Palestine.  Meanwhile, famed rock-and-roll drummer, Cozy Powell, who would play with numerous groups from the Jeff Beck Group[iii] to Rainbow[iv] and Black Sabbath[v], is born on this date.
V.   1948: Canada recognizes the nation of Israel.
W. 1949: Hungary nationalizes all its industries.  Meanwhile, KC2XAK of Bridgeport, Connecticut, became the first ultrahigh frequency (UHF) television station to commence operations on a regular daily schedule.
X.   1957: Singers Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme were married in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Y.   1958: The Baltimore Colts beat the New York Giants 23-17 in the NFL Championship Game.
Z.    1967: Hyundai Motor Company underwent founding in Seoul, South Korea, on this date.
AA.        1968: Israeli commandoes destroy 13 Lebanese warplanes on the ground.
BB.         1971: In Washington, D.C., the 89th U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice John Marshall Harlan II died.  President Dwight D. Eisenhower nominated his fellow Republican to fill the seat of Associate Justice Robert H. Jackson, DemocratHarlan served from 03-17-1955 to 09-23-1971.
CC.        1972: Eastern Airlines Flight 401, a Lockheed L-1011 Tri-Star, crashed into the Florida Everglades near Miami International Airport, killing 101 of the 1976 people aboard.  (Investigators determined that the crew was distracted by a burned-out indicator light and failed to notice that the autopilot had become disengaged, sending the plane into a slow descent leading to the late-night crash).  Elsewhere, following 36 years of publication, the last weekly issue of Life magazine hit newsstands; it later became a monthly publication.
DD.        1975:  A bomb exploded in the main terminal of New York’s LaGuardia Airport, killing 11 people.  The authorities have NEVER determined the identity of the bomber.
EE.         1978: During the Gator Bowl, Ohio State coach Woody Hayes punched Clemson player Charlie Bauman, who’d intercepted an Ohio State pass.  The university fired Hayes the following day.  Elsewhere, the Constitution of Spain goes into effect.
FF.          1983: Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys[vi] died on this date from an accidental drowning.
GG.       1986: Former British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan died at his home south of London at age 92.
HH.       1988: The Soviet Red Army hockey team edges the New York Islanders, 3-2, at Nassau Coliseum.
II.   1989: Dissident and playwright Vaclav Havel assumed the presidency of Czechoslovakia.
JJ. 1992: New York Governor Mario Cuomo commuted the prison sentence of Jean Harris, the convicted killer of the “Scarsdale Diet” author Herman Tarnower.   David and Sharon Schoo of St. Charles, Illinois, underwent arrest at O’Hare International Airport upon their return from a Mexican vacation for leaving their 4- and 9- year old daughters at home, alone.  (The Schoos pleaded guilty to child neglect so the judge sentenced them to probation; the court put them up for adoption. 
KK.       1997: Hong Kong began killing 1.25 million chickens, the entire population, for fear of the spread of ‘bird flu.’
LL.         1998: Khmer Rouge leaders apologized for the 1970s genocide in Cambodia that claimed 1 million lives.
MM.     2003: Monsignor Michael Courtney, Pope John Paul II’s ambassador in Burundi, was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen.  Elsewhere, actor Earl Hindman, who had played the mostly unseen neighbor Wilson on “Home Improvements,” died in Stamford, Connecticut, at age 61.
NN.        2006:  Word reaches the United States of the execution of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein (because of the time difference, it was the morning of December 30 in Iraq when the hanging took place.  In a statement, President George W. Bush called Saddam’s execution an important milestone on Iraq’s road to democracy.  Elsewhere, Ethiopian troops eject Islamists from Mogadishu, Somalia, during heavy fighting.
OO.       2008: Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s lawyer responded to impeachment charges, saying a vague array of charges and evidence did not merit removing his client from office.
PP.          2010: The last death row inmate in Cuba has his sentence commuted; since 2008, numerous prisoners have had their sentences commuted as the government moves away from capital punishment.
QQ.       2011: Poland announces that it is going to provide amnesty to illegal immigrants, beginning January 01, 2012.
RR.        2012: Lady Margaret Thatcher leaves a British hospital after undergoing surgery to remove a minor tumor.
SS.2013: The Obama administration claims that ‘1.1 million Americans now have signed up for Obamacare.’
TT.         2014Scottish health officials report the nation's first case of Ebola after diagnosing a health care worker returning from Sierra Leone; the worker did not manifest symptoms until her arrival in Scotland and is currently in stable condition.
UU.        2017: Puerto Rico authorities said nearly half of the power customers in the U.S. territory still lacked electricity, more than three months after Hurricane Maria.

The Zombies released their next compilation album, “Time of the Season,” on February 24, 2017.  The album featured a concise collection of 28 top quality tracks, some of which appeared on singles, as well as on their first two albums, plus more rediscovered/uncovered musical tidbits and tunes from the Argent and Colin Blunstone solo collections.  While you might only find it on CD if you search the web, you sure as heck can find it on wax so visit your favorite record store and consider adding it to your collection- you will be you did.

Free released a ‘best of’ compilation on May 04, 2012, “AllRight Now: The Collection.”  This album featured beaucoup selections from all the band’s studio albums, including both post-break-up and reformation albums.  If you have yet to buy the music of this short-lived but highly influential British band, this is a fabulous way in which to do it so please, seek it out and consider adding it to your collection- you will be glad you did.  Great music by a phenomenal band.

[i] We promoted the music of this famed British group- the Moody Blues- beginning on Monday, 23-October-2017 through Sunday, 11-February-2018.  This included all members of the band including Denny Laine and Patrick Moraz.
[ii] We hope to promote the music of both the Band and its members sometime in the next 10-15 years.
[iii] We presented another series of interconnected bands which included the Jeff Beck Group, Free, Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, the Firm, Mott the Hoople, Ian Hunter, the Yardbirds, and a plethora of solo and group efforts beginning on Wednesday, 02-July-2014 through Sunday, 19-October-2014.  We definitely hope that you will seek this music out and consider adding it to your growing collection.
[iv] We shared the music of Deep Purple, Ian Gillan, Captain Beyond, Elf, and Rainbow beginning on Tuesday, 20-March-2018 and concluded this massive offering on Sunday, 14-October-2018.  Please seek out the music by all of these phenomenal bands.  All are fabulous.
[v] We hope to offer the music of Black Sabbath sometime in the next decade.
