B.    1492: The people of Sicily expel 100,000 of its Jewish inhabitants.

E.    1695: Britain imposed the ‘window tax’ on this date, which leads to the bricking up of numerous windows to avoid paying the tax.

Q.   1877: President Rutherford B. Hayes became the first U.S. president to celebrate his silver (25th) wedding anniversary in the White House.
R.   1879: Thomas Edison first publicly demonstrated his electric incandescent light in Menlo Park, New Jersey.
S.    1880: In Uniontown, Pa., the future 50th U.S. secretary of state (among other things) George C. Marshall is born.  A political independent, President Harry S. Truman nominated him to the position of secretary of state and Marshall served from 01-21-1947 to 01-20-1949.   Prior to that, Marshall served the nation as its 15th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army from 09-01-1939 to 11-18-1945 and eventually became its 3rd U.S. secretary of defense from 09-21-1950 to 09-12-1951.
T.    1891: New York’s new Immigration Depot opened at Ellis Island with which, to provide improved facilities for the massive numbers of new arrivals.
U.   1894: In Minerva, Kentucky, future 77th U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Stanley Forman Reed is born.   President Franklin Delano Roosevelt would nominate his fellow Democrat to fill the seat of Republican Associate Justice George Sutherland’s seat.  Reed would serve from 01-27-1938 to 02-25-1957.
V.   1897: Brooklyn, New York, spent its final day as a separate entity before becoming part of New York City.
W. 1904: New York City’s Times Square saw its first New Year’s Eve celebration, with an estimated 200,000 people in attendance.
X.   1909: The Manhattan Bridge, spanning the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn, officially opened to vehicular traffic.
Y.   1923: In London, the BBC first broadcast the chimes of Big Ben.
Z.    1929: Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians played “Auld Lang Syne” as a New Year’s Eve song for the first time.
AA.        1942: During World War II, in the month of December, the Allies sink 60 U-Boats, 330,000 tons.  Meanwhile, future guitarist with Eric Burdon and the Animals[i] and the Police[ii], Andy Summers, was born in England on this date.
BB.         1943: Peter Quaife, future original bassist with the British rock band, the Kinks[iii], was born in England on this date.
CC.        1946: President Harry S. Truman officially proclaimed the end of hostilities in World War II.
DD.        1947: Burton Cummings, future guitarist, keyboardist, flautist, and vocalist with the Canadian rock band, the Guess Who[iv], was born on this date.  Meanwhile, country and western singers, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans married on this date.
EE.         1950: Future bassist with the American rock band, Aerosmith[v]—Tom Hamilton—is born on this date.
FF.          1951: The Marshall Plan expired after distributing more than $12 billion in foreign aid.
GG.       1953: Willie Shoemaker broke his own record as he won his 485th race of the year.
HH.       1954: The last episode of the radio show “Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok” aired on this date.
II.   1955: General Motors became the first United States’ corporation to earn more than one billion dollars in a single year.
JJ. 1960: The farthing coin, which had been in use since the 13th century, ceased to be legal tender.
KK.       1961: The Green Bay Packers shut out the New York Giants 37-0 in NFL Championship game.  Elsewhere, the Beach Boys play their first concert under this name.  Meanwhile, the Marshall Plan expired after distributing more than $12 billion in foreign aid.
LL.         1967: The Green Bay Packers beat the Dallas Cowboys 21-17 in NFL Championship game at 13-degrees below zero, a game fans know as the “Ice Bowl.”  Meanwhile, the Oakland Raiders beat the Houston Oilers 40-7 in AFL Championship Game.
MM.     1969: Joseph A. Yablonski, an unsuccessful candidate for the presidency of the United Mine Workers of America, was shot to death with his wife and daughter in their Clarksville, Pennsylvania, home by hitmen acting under the orders of UMWA president Tony Boyle.
NN.        1972: The Washington Redskins beat the Dallas Cowboys 26-3 in NFC Championship GameThe Miami Dolphins beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-7 in AFC Championship Game.  Meanwhile, Major League Baseball player Roberto Clemente, aged 38, died when a plane upon which he was traveling to bring relief supplies to earthquake-devastated Nicaragua, crashed shortly upon takeoff from Puerto Rico.
OO.       1974: Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks join Fleetwood Mac[vi].  Meanwhile, private American citizens got the opportunity to buy and own gold for the first time in more than 40 years.
PP.          1978: Taiwanese diplomats struck their colors for the final time from the embassy flagpole in Washington, D.C. The event marked the end of diplomatic relations with the United States, an event considered to be the selling-out of Free China for Communist China.  It happened during the presidency of Democrat Jimmy Carter.
QQ.       1979: The Winterland Concert Hall in San Francisco, California, closes after 556 concerts.  Elsewhere, at year-end, oil prices were 88 percent higher than at the start of 1979.
RR.        1985: Singer Rick Nelson[vii] and six other people were killed when a fire broke out aboard a DC-3 that was taking the group to Dallas, Texas, New Year’s Eve performance.
SS.1986: Ninety-seven people were killed when fire broke out in the DuPont Plaza Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  (Three hotel workers later pleaded guilty regarding the blaze.
TT.         1989: The legendary Fog Bowl: the Chicago Bears beat the Philadelphia Eagles 20-12.
UU.        1990: Titleholder Gary Kasparov of the Soviet Union won the world chess championship match against his countryman, Anatoly Karpov.
VV.        1999: The London Eye—the world’s largest Ferris wheel—opens along the bank of the Thames.  Elsewhere, Russian thug Vladimir Putin succeeded President Boris Yeltsin, who had just announced his resignation.  Finally, Sarah Knauss died at the age of 119 years.  She was the world’s oldest person, having been born on September 24, 1880.
WW.    2004: President George W. Bush pledged $350 million to help tsunami victims and did not rule out the possibility of sending still more aid to help people recover from the storm that killed hundreds of thousands of people across the Indian Ocean.
XX.        2011: In North Korea, Kim Jung-Un is given title of “Supreme Leader” of the armed forces.
YY.        2012: Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez recovers from a cancer operation; meanwhile, his cabinet ministers pray for his swift recovery.
ZZ.         2013Breaking with long-standing tradition among Russian heads of state, President Vladimir Putin delivered two New Year's speeches rather than one; he made his second speech from Khabarovsk, a city that experienced devastating floods this summer.
AAA.   2014: The Italian coast guard intercepts a boat carrying 900 Syrian refugees and brings them safely to shore.  Human traffickers operating the boat abandoned it after setting its navigational instruments on a collision course with the Italian mainland.

Bad Company released their next ‘best of’ compilation- their first five original albums, “Original Album Series” on July 08, 2014, that included their biggest albums.  This band ranks among the top 10 of all-time greatest rock and roll bands which is why every fan of the group, its predecessor components, mainly Mott the Hoople and Free, should want to add to your growing CD and LP collection.  We hope you will seek it out by searching for it at your favorite haunt for nothing but the absolute best in rock-and-roll music; you definitely will be glad you did.
